The Not-Olympic, Winter Games Themed Contest

February brought the Olympics, so what better contest to run than an Olympic-themed contest. However, with all the copyright and trademark issues with calling anything Olympics, we went with a Winter Games that Occur Every Four Years theme.

The company I work for has a product that we want to really make a push on selling. Even though we are an inbound customer service call center, it's a product that is only $10.00 and will save them money and increase the security of our customer's doing business. We used soft sales approach in when selling these.

First thing we did is everyone picked a country to represent. Some of the countries represented were: Mordor, Catan, Treasure Island, 'Merica, PawPoint, Gondor, and Atlantica. We had their image and a small flag by them in our break room so everyone in the company could see what we were up to and the agents could see their current standings.

Here was the contest. We ran it for 2 weeks. For every 3 products the agent sold, they received a try in one of the events.

The first event was Curling. For this we had a 6 lbs medicine ball. We taped out a curling area. The agents would roll the ball 3 times. Points were awarded for getting the ball in their specific zones. We did mark out a large box outside the circle that was worth 1 point if they got it stop in there. Most points wins!

The second event was the Ski Jump, Men's and Women's. We marked off an area in our call center with lines indicating 2 meter, 4 meter, 6 meter and 8 meter. Then from a sitting position, both feet on the ground and no running starts, the agent would push themselves as far as they could. I'm pretty sure some people started training for this one. We only had one person fall over, luckily he wasn't hurt. So do this one at your own risk, but it's still pretty fun. Farthest distance wins!

The third event was the biathlon. We used the same meter lines set up for the ski jump. For this one you'll need a Nerf Dart gun that sticks, I prefer the Maverick (http://www.amazon.com/Nerf-284182050-N-Strike-Maverick/dp/B00DW1JU7S). I've used this in quite a few contests. It holds 6 shots, so they got 1 shot from the 2 meter line, 2 from the 4, 2 from the 6, and 1 from the 8. We had a large picture with a glass frame with a target drawn on it with dry-erase markers. Each ring in the target was different points. The most points wins!

You may be asking, "what do these have to do with rewarding those who sell?" Well, the grand prize winner, the one who sold the most received a $50 Visa Gift card. We then had medalists for the individual events.
  1. $15 gift card to iTunes or Google Play!
  2. $10 gift card to favorite fast food restaurant
  3. $5 gift card to Cold Stone.
We also bought medals from a party store and had a medals ceremony.
What I found in my experience in call centers that when you do contests based on something like, who sells the most, you get the same people winning and others stop trying halfway through the contest. By having a grand prize and then smaller events or contests, I get people trying. They may be out of the running on the main prize, but there is still a chance for them to get a smaller one, compete, and have fun.

One other nice thing about this contest, is it can be done with anything, highest quality scores, building rapport, attendance, schedule adherence, most survey responses, etc.
